Is the surf up?

Where are the waves?

How about tomorrow?

Is the Surf UP right now?

Now you can tell whether the surf is up just by checking your computer at home. A buoy just three miles west of Dana Point uses sensors to measure wave heights and direction. Each hour, the information is radioed first to a shore station and then to Scripps Institution of Oceanography where it goes right into a web page - cdip.ucsd.edu - that anyone can view.

How to Read the Dana Point Wave Charts

Hs : Height of waves - averages the highest 1/3 of all waves in 30 minutes.

Tp : Period of the waves - the time in seconds between wave peaks.

Dp : Wave Direction - measured in degrees like a compass (e.g. 180 degrees tells you waves are coming from the south).
