NOTES
The RDI Waves ADCP has three independent sources of wave spectra. Pressure,
Orbital Velocity and Surface track are all used to construct spectra. While
each source has its own set of errors, the combination of independent
sources of spectra provides the opportunity to check for self-consistency.
SENSORS
A; ADCP Waves Array; Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler; BASE
TESTS
SECTION: TIME SERIES VALUES
A; NO PRESSURE; check that sensor is deep enough.
A; CHECKSUM; verify checksums, check data integrity.
A; DISCONTINUITY; check for time gaps of greater than 5 seconds.
A; WILD POINT EDITOR; screen for points far from the mean.
A; MIN/MAX; data screened against appropriate min, max values.
A; DELTA MAX; check point-to-point changes, screen points.
A; TOTAL PERCENT GOOD; check for 90% minimum good data.
A; DYNAMIC MOTION CHECK; check if orientation changing while sampling.
A; TILT CHECK; check instrument orientation for static tilts.
A; MEAN CURRENTS CHECK; check current during sample interval.
SECTION: SPECTRAL VALUES
A; STANDARD DEVIATION TEST; check standard deviation from 0.9-1 Hz
A; DIR. ARRAY PERCENT GOOD; check percent of good sensors in array.
A; DIRECTIONAL SPECTRUM MINIMUM; check minimum above noise floor.
A; RANGE CHECK; limit directional spectrum to valid frequencies.
A; SPECTRA COMPARISON; visual comparison of independent spectra.
SECTION: PARAMETER VALUES
A; LOW Hs CHECK; check if Hs is below the noise floor minimum.
A; RANGE CHECK; check range of peak period and direction.
DETAILS
NO PRESSURE
Check for low, 0, or negative pressure sensor readings.
END
CHECKSUM
Check data transmission integrity, discard ensembles with bad checksums.
END
DISCONTINUITY
Time series with discontinuities greater than 5s are screened.
END
WILD POINT EDITOR
Time series are iteratively screened for data that is 4 sigma or greater,
outside the mean.
END
MIN/MAX
Data is screened for appropriate minimum and maximum values.
END
DELTA MAX
Data points are screened for Maximum point to point change.
END
TOTAL PERCENT GOOD
After other screening has been performed, 90% good data is desired to process
waves.
END
DYNAMIC MOTION CHECK
Motion data is checked to see if instrument orientation is dynamically
changing during sampling.
END
TILT CHECK
Instrument orientation is checked for static tilts and up/downward facing
orientation.
END
MEAN CURRENTS CHECK
Mean currents are checked during the sample interval.
END
STANDARD DEVIATION TEST
Surface track spectrum is checked for high standard deviation between 0.9 and
1Hz, indicating poor data quality.
END
DIR. ARRAY PERCENT GOOD
Percent good for individual sensors in the array is used to check for
adequate array geometry for directional spectra.
END
DIRECTIONAL SPECTRUM MINIMUM
Directional spectrum is checked for minimum above the noise floor.
END
SPECTRUM RANGE CHECK
Directional spectrum is presented only out to valid frequencies.
END
SPECTRA COMPARISON
Non-directional spectra from pressure, orbital velocity and surface track
sources are overlaid. They should compare closely over the valid frequency
ranges.
END
LOW Hs CHECK
All wave parameters are screened if Hs is smaller than the noise floor minimum.
END
RANGE CHECK
Peak period and peak direction are checked for validity between the minimum
and maximum values.
