NOTES
Nobska's MAVS, Modular Acoustic Velocity Sensor, is a high accuracy, point
measurement, velocity sensor suitable for combined wave and current studies
in both the field and the laboratory. MAVS uses a differential travel-time
technique and four independent acoustic paths to measure the velocity vector
in a 10 centimeter volume to an accuracy of 1.0 millimeters per second (or
1% of the flow speed if larger) with a resolution of 0.5 millimeters per
second. Measurements can be made at up to 30 Hz (operator selectable),
making the instrument well suited for measurements of turbulence.
MAVS has no dependence on scatterers in the water column and works equally
well in clear or turbid water, mud, or bubbles. Bad measurements are
automatically flagged by the system. All other measurements have the stated
single ping accuracy. Calibration can be performed easily and effectively
in the field by the operator using routines built into the system. MAVS can
be used in a direct reading or internal logging mode, or both, at the
discretion of the operator. It can be self-powered or externally powered,
depending on the needs of the deployment. Nobska's MWAVES and Real-Time
MWAVES software allow for post-deployment or real-time calculation of
directional wave spectra and provide time histories of wave field
statistics.
