Title January 2017 Sand Level Measurements in Nearshore Southern California.

Abstract This data set contains 5-column ASCII survey point data from a strip of San Diego County Coastline extending from ~600m north of the Penasquitos Lagoon entrance southward to the mushroom house (north of SIO pier/dike rock). ATV data and Dolly data were taken at low tide to maximize the coverage area. Jetski data were taken at high tide to maximize beach coverage out to 10 meters water depth. 78 cross shore transects were driven on approximately 100 meter spacing. Our SIO GPS base station was used during the survey. Survey was competed over the course of two days. NOTE: Starting 20070829, a fifth column of substrate data has been added. See the Supplemental Information for details.

Purpose The data described in this document will be compared with forthcoming data sets to determine rates of shoreline change along the San Diego County Coastline and as a ground truth for simultaneous Lidar surveys as scheduled.

Supplemental_Information Terrestrial (ATV,Dolly) and bathymetric (Jetski) systems utilize Ashtech Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers (Z-Extreme)to provide platform positioning. The GPS receivers record pseudo-range and phase information at 5Hz for post-processing. Orientation is determined with a GyroTrac Gyro recording roll, pitch and yaw at 10 Hz for the Jetski on day one only and no gyro used the second day, as well as YEI 3-Space Sensor Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) / Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) as the ATV gyro. In addition to post-processed data, 1 Hz real-time kinematic carrier phase differentially corrected data are also acquired as a navigation aid and as a supplement to post-processed data. The jetski also incorporates a custom sonar system using 192KHz transducers pinging at 20Hz. The Dolly consists of a hand pushed three-wheeled tripod with a GPS antenna. The data files are comprised of five columns: Lat, Lon, Z(rel. to MSL), DateTime(UTC), Substrate type. The Substrate type is defined by a numeric code: 0 = No data, 1 = Sand, 2 = Cobbles, 3 = Bedrock. The substrate type was identified by the ATV driver at the time of the survey. The Dolly and Jetski collect no substrate data.

Jetski tablet = Toughpad ? GPS rovers were sampled at 5Hz for waverunner survey, 1 Hz for ATV/Dolly. New base GPS antennea was used at SIO (TRM57971.00) Some data marked as red to indicate rock reef and blue for cobble. Notes: Transects 27 - 34 there was a slight 2 to 10cm discrepancy with ATV,Dolly and jetski in the swash zone. 2017 We are switching from 100meter to 200meter transect line spacing for the POSNCEX area. It will now be forty lines on 200meter spacing. We are also switching from the POSNCEX lines to the standard MOP lines so they will all be new locations but the coverage area is basically the same. Logistics may be tricky for the ATV/dolly but even so it will shorten the jumbo from two days to one.

Process_Description Transfer raw GPS data from both base station and rover Ashtech GPS receivers to processing computer. Waypoint Consulting's Grafnav program processes the dual frequency GPS data for an NAD83 solution. Matlab programs then adjust the position and elevation by using the gyro data.
