Datawell Buoy Calibrations

CDIP has a custom-designed facility for validating the output of Datawell buoys and other oceanographic instruments; some details on the facility are given below. To view calibration data for a specific buoy, select its serial number from the menu at left.
CDIP performs pre-deployment and post-deployment checks on all its buoys. To validate the buoys' wave measurements, CDIP uses its own 'calibration stand', a 1.8m diameter wheel which reproduces the orbital motion that the buoys experience at sea.

Each buoy is run on the stand for a couple of hours. At regular intervals the buoy is rotated through 90-degree steps to help check the response of each of its accelerometers. The rotational speed of the wheel is also varied so that the buoy experiences motions characteristic of both high-frequency seas and low-frequency swell. Most buoys are run at 3 different speeds, with the wheel spinning at periods varying from 7 seconds to over 20 seconds.

Both displacement and spectral data are collected from the buoys when they are on the calibration stand. These data are used to validate the buoys' heave and direction measurements. System data such as buoy orientation and GPS position are also recorded and checked. If there are significant anomalies in any of the output, the buoys are returned to Datawell for more exhaustive inspection and calibration.

Since the buoys also measure sea surface temperature, a check of the SST is included in the tests. The buoy is placed in a test bath overnight, and then its temperature readings are compared to the values from a temperature probe placed in the mooring eye.
